A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SUCCESS AND ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GOLDEN EAGLES QUARTERBACK AUSTIN DAVIS UPON BEING NAMED RECIPIENT OF THE 2011 C-SPIRE WIRELESS CONERLY TROPHY AND THE 2011 BURLSWORTH TROPHY.
WHEREAS, Austin Davis, a walk-on football player at the University of Southern Mississippi, has been an astonishing addition to the USM Golden Eagles since his first starting season in 2008; and
WHEREAS, since beginning his college football career at USM, Austin Davis has broken every single passing record at the school, most notably those set by former Golden Eagle Quarterback, Brett Favre; and
WHEREAS, Austin Davis was ranked 16th nationally in total offense and 52nd in passing efficiency in the 2008 Football Bowl Subdivision, and his total offense average in 2008 was highest amongst freshmen quarterbacks across the nation; and
WHEREAS, leading the Golden Eagles to the 2008 New Orleans Bowl, Austin Davis threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns, and he became the first freshman quarterback in the school's football history to win a bowl game victory; and
WHEREAS, the 2008 on-field talents of Austin Davis did not go unnoticed in the nation, as he was named to the All-Conference USA freshman team and was a freshman All-American honorable mention by CollegeFootballNews.com; and
WHEREAS, returning to the field in 2010 after suffering a broken foot during the 2009 football season, Austin Davis continued shattering school records and led the Golden Eagles to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl; and
WHEREAS, Austin Davis led the Golden Eagles through the most triumphant season in the history of USM's football program in 2011 with an impressive 10 wins in the regular season, a dominating victory in the Conference USA Championship game against the favored and previously undefeated University of Houston in which he threw four touchdown passes, and a win against the University of Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl to give the Golden Eagles a 12-2 season, the most wins in a season for USM, which secured the Golden Eagles the #21 rank in the Bowl Championship Series poll; and
WHEREAS, Austin Davis left his mark on the Golden Eagles football program with a record-setting 10,727 passing yards, 81 touchdown passes, 61.6% completion percentage and 12,082 total offense; and
WHEREAS, Austin Davis was selected as the recipient of the C-Spire Wireless Conerly Trophy, an award given to Mississippi's top college football player, on November 29, 2011, at a banquet held at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson; and
WHEREAS, the late Brandon Burlsworth, a 1994 walk-on football player with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, became a three-year starter with the Razorbacks Football Team and was named an All-American in 1998, and was killed in a tragic car accident just 11 days after being selected as the 63rd overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 1999; and
WHEREAS, the Burlsworth Trophy, named in honor of the late Brandon Burlsworth, is awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football who began his college football career as a walk-on, and on December 9, 2011, Austin Davis was selected as the recipient of this prestigious award at a banquet held in Springdale, Arkansas; and
WHEREAS, being the recipient of the Conerly Trophy and the Burlsworth Trophy not only further define Austin Davis as a talented individual, but also distinguish him from his peers with exceptional athleticism, skill and ability, and solidify him as the best college football player in the State of Mississippi and the most outstanding walk-on player in the nation; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend the stellar achievements of outstanding student athletes such as Austin Davis, whose talents and high degree of sportsmanship reflect honor upon his school and the state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Austin Davis upon his athletic accomplishments with the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, for being the recipient of the C-Spire Wireless Conerly Trophy and the Burlsworth Trophy, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Austin Davis, the University of Southern Mississippi and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
