A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF COACH MORRIS BROWN, AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

     WHEREAS, "To everything there is a season, and time to every purpose under the Heaven," and as such, the grand architect of the universe, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul's destiny, has summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Coach Morris Brown, to eternal rest, as he has made life's final transition from earthly travailing to heavenly reward, rendering great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi and the Jones County Community lost a wonderful friend, community leader, great coach and educator on April 29, 2009, with the passing of Coach Morris Brown; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Brown served the people of Jones County as a coach and teacher for many years at Shady Grove School and Northwest High School; and

     WHEREAS, even though the football field or basketball court may have been his favorite classrooms, Coach Brown was always a teacher at heart, embracing any teachable moment wherever the situation called for it; and

     WHEREAS, the best teachers genuinely care for their students, and Coach Brown was no exception, he had a way of picking at students that made them feel completely at home, with many of his students describing Coach Brown as not only their coach and teacher, but also as their friend; and

     WHEREAS, in the crucible of athletic events, the pressure can get to the best of coaches, but not Coach Brown, his players have testified that they never heard him use foul language or mistreat a student or player, Coach Brown knew there was a proper way to go about things and he understood, followed and taught that; and

     WHEREAS, every coach strives to win, but Coach Brown never put winning above sportsmanship, he taught his students the real meaning of being a true sport, whether they won or lost; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Brown continued service to Jones County by serving as the Director of Transportation of the Jones County Schools, helping to ensure the safety of children to and from school each day; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Brown, upon retirement from the public education system, entered the political arena and served on the Jones County Board of Supervisors for a term of four years; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the selfless and caring nature of an individual of the esteemed caliber as that of Coach Morris Brown:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the life and legacy of Coach Morris Brown, and extend sincere and deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Coach Morris Brown and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
