A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE OUTSTANDING MUSICIANSHIP OF THE PRESTIGIOUS AND PROLIFIC MISSISSIPPI LIONS' ALL-STATE BAND AND CONGRATULATING THE BAND AND ITS MEMBERS ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 60TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF ASTOUNDING MUSICAL EXCELLENCE AND SHOWMANSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Lions' All-State Band is the most outstanding and dynamic musical organization for talented high school musicians in Mississippi's history, and in 2009 celebrated its 60th anniversary in grandeur after winning its 26th international marching championship at the Lions' International Convention on July 7, 2009, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, becoming the only all-state band to win five consecutive championships from 2003 to 2007; and

     WHEREAS, the epitome of the best artistic musicianship, superior discipline and cooperative spirit of hard work for Mississippi Lionism, the band is an awesome goodwill ambassador which has greatly enhanced our state's image in the world and has promoted pride in Mississippi's cultural musical heritage; and

     WHEREAS, having competed internationally on six continents and distinguished itself as a winning example to other all-state bands, the Mississippi Lions' All-State Band is an impressive model of the state's ethnic diversity and reflects the core values that are inherently embedded in the hospitable nature true to Mississippians; and

     WHEREAS, initiated on the vision of Roy Martin, a band director from Greenwood, in 1949, he along with other Mississippi Lions, music teachers, community leaders and band parents also spearheaded the band's formation, sponsorship and success to showcase Mississippi's best high school musicians, dancers and color guards, annually auditioning hundreds of talented band students from across the state each year for a coveted place on the band's 145-member roster; and

     WHEREAS, with the beat of each drum, as the brasses and woodwinds melodiously infuse the atmosphere with their serenely harmonic chords and the dancers and color guard march, dance and twirl in a syncopated rhythmic cadence, the band students are extremely passionate and articulate in playing their concerts, singing and marching routines, communicating heartfelt emotion to their audiences by playing a versatile repertoire of music; and

     WHEREAS, under the current direction and management of Jeff Cannon and assistant direction of Mickey Mangum, this elite group strives for musical perfection and always conveys gracious Mississippi hospitality, as they are assisted by a highly qualified staff which develops technically challenging performances for the international competition; and

     WHEREAS, before coming under its current direction and management, the band was crafted into its 60-year award-winning condition by former director-managers, the late Dr. Kent Sills, Gary Cook, Eli Pacetti and others, who each contributed to boosting the band to its elite status; and

     WHEREAS, the legacy of the Mississippi Lions' All-State Band is legendary with a tradition of musical excellence that is unprecedented as students are motivated to achieve their full academic and musical potential in order to obtain college scholarships and become valuable Mississippi citizens; and

     WHEREAS, it is with pride that this Legislature honors such an efficiently successful organization as the Mississippi Lions' All-State Band, which is a memorable musical family with cherished travel experiences and friendships for a lifetime, all of which have contributed to an increase in Mississippi tourism and more national and international respect for Mississippi culture:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the outstanding musicianship of the prestigious and prolific Mississippi Lions' All-State Band, congratulate the band and its members on the occasion of its 60th year anniversary of astounding musical excellence and showmanship and extend sincere wishes for continued success in all of its future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Lions' All-State Band and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
