A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LONGEVITY OF MRS. RUBY BUCKLEY BINES BARNES AND CONGRATULATING HER ON CELEBRATING THE OCCASION OF HER 100TH BIRTHDAY ON JANUARY 11, 2015.
WHEREAS, born January 11, 1915, in New Hebron, Mississippi, Mrs. Ruby Buckley Bines Barnes, a precious gift of life and love, celebrated the 100th anniversary of her birth on Sunday, January 11, 2015, with her family and friends with an acknowledgment ceremony on Saturday, January 10, 2015; and
WHEREAS, known for her kindness and willingness to help and assist others, "Aunt Ruby" as she was affectionately called in the community, devoted most of her life as a housewife serving her family and community, as a nurturing mother committed to raising six daughters and two sons, as well as assisting with her nine sibling and her nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, the matriarch of her family dynasty, Mrs. Barnes remains the archetype icon and central foundation of a family that retains and unbreakable bond of love, honor, devotion, commitment and encouragement for each of the five remaining generations; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong member of her home church, Oak Ridge Baptist Church in New Hebron, "Aunt Ruby" offered moral and spiritual support to her neighbors throughout the Oak Ridge community, even providing a "head start" program for students out of her home in addition to her subsequent employment with the Universal Plant in Mendenhall, before her retirement; and
WHEREAS, at 100 years of age, Mrs. Barnes continues to be a blessing to others, encompassing the fulfillment of her role as a church missionary, having served various missions within the church, focusing on the cares and needs of the women in the church and community, and being a faithful choir member who always imparts words of Christian advice and wise counsel to those in her company as a reminder of God's unfailing love for us; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Barnes had experience the unique opportunity to see and do so many things in 100 years: from share cropping to owning 28 acres; from owning a mule and buggy to wagons to cars and trucks; from using lamps to electric lights; from hollering across the field to using a telephone; witnessing the eventual eradication of Jim Crow Laws which provided for the integration of voting for the first time in Rockport, Mississippi; and witnessing the election and re-election of the first African-American President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend the life of such a remarkable individual as Mrs. Barnes, who still exudes the gentle strength that has sustained her throughout this journey, and whose life is a testament to God's promise of longevity to those who diligently seek Him and obey His will:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and longevity of Mrs. Ruby Buckley Bines Barnes, congratulate her on this most auspicious occasion of celebrating her 100th birthday on January 11, 2015, and express sincere wishes for many more years of continued love, joy and happiness.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Ruby Buckley Bines Barnes and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
