A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MR. DAVID ABNEY UPON BEING NAMED THE 11TH CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER OF THE UNITED PARCEL SERVICE (UPS).

     WHEREAS, Mr. David Abney, a native of Greenwood, Mississippi, has become the 11th Chief Executive Officer of UPS in the company's 107 year history; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Abney has a storied history with UPS, which entails him working his way from the bottom to climb the corporate ladder; and

     WHEREAS, he earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Delta State University, served on the Board of Directors of the Delta State University Alumni Foundation, was a Trustee of the UPS Foundation, UPS's charitable arm, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of Johnson Controls, Inc., Airlines for America, and the Coalition of Service Industries, which represents service businesses and seeks to lower barriers to world trade; and

     WHEREAS, he began his UPS career in 1974, as a part-time package loader, and over the course of his 40 year career, he has held various operational positions leading to his current position; and

     WHEREAS, throughout his years with the company, he has managed responsibility for UPS logistics, sustainability, and engineering, leading the company's significant investment in alternative fuel fleets, and implementing programs to expand the company's total freight volume, where he directed the UPS transportation network serving more than 200 countries and territories; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend and recognize native sons of our state who work hard to achieve great success:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. David Abney upon being named the 11th Chief Operating Officer of the United Parcel Service (UPS).

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. David Abney, the United Parcel Service and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
