A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SMITHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BAND FOR WINNING THE 2009 MISSISSIPPI CLASS 1A STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP AND RECEIVING A SUPERIOR RATING AT REGION 1 STATE MARCHING FESTIVAL.

     WHEREAS, on October 17, 2009, the Smithville High School Band (the Seminole Band) competed in the Region 1 State Marching Festival in Tupelo, Mississippi, and on October 24, 2009, the Seminole Band competed in the State Marching Band Championships in Clinton, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Smithville High School Band received a superior rating at the Tupelo festival and was the only Class 1A band to earn such a rating in the Magnolia State of Mississippi in 2009; and

     WHEREAS, this rating qualified the Seminole Band to perform in the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s State Marching Band Championship competition at Clinton High School on October 24, 2009; and

     WHEREAS, at the State Marching Band Championship competition the band was judged in five categories:  music, marching, general effect, color guard and percussion; and

     WHEREAS, the Smithville Band received the first place superior rating in all five areas and was declared the Mississippi Class 1A State Marching Band Champions for 2009; and

     WHEREAS, the Seminole marching band is under the field direction of Drum Major Sarah Lovelady and the band’s director is Mr. Jeff Colburn; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi House of Representatives congratulates the Smithville High School Band and its band director for attaining this prestigious honor; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend and congratulate those marching bands, such as the Smithville High School Band, who achieve excellence in art, and their leaders, such as Mr. Jeff Colburn, who serve as role models for the youth of the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Smithville High School Band for winning the 2009 Mississippi Class 1A State Marching Band Championship, receiving a superior rating at Region 1 State Marching Festival and for displaying tireless devotion to their artistic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Smithville High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
