A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE BENNIE G. THOMPSON FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE SELECT COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE THE JANUARY 6, 2021, ATTACK ON THE UNITED STATES CAPITOL.

     WHEREAS, on January 6, 2021, a mob attacked the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., and the Capitol Complex was locked down and lawmakers and staff were evacuated, while rioters assaulted law enforcement officers, vandalized property and occupied the building for several hours; and

     WHEREAS, on June 30, 2021, the resolution to form the United States House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol passed by a vote of 222 to 190; and

     WHEREAS, this distinguished committee was tasked to investigate both the security issues of the January 6 attack as well as the circumstances leading up to the attack; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bennie G., Thompson from Mississippi, was appointed to serve as chairman of this crucially important committee, and Representative Liz Cheney, from Wyoming, was appointed to serve as vice chairman; and

     WHEREAS, other members of the committee include: Representative Zoe Lofgren; Representative Adam Schiff; Representative Pete Aguilar; Representative Stephanie Murphy; Representative Jamie Raskin; Representative Elaine Luria; and Representative Adam Kinzinger; and

     WHEREAS, the investigation into the January 6, 2021, event began with public hearings on July 27, 2021, and by the end of November 2021, the committee had interviewed over 250 people; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Thompson has diligently served, and continues to serve, in his capacity as chairman of this distinguished committee, with dignity, patriotism and respect for the American people; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend exceptional leaders from Mississippi, especially those such as Representative Thompson, whose dedication and service  brings honor to the State of Mississippi and to the United States of America:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Representative Bennie G. Thompson for his outstanding service as chairman of the United States House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Bennie G. Thompson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
