House Concurrent Resolution 29

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE RESURRECTION CATHOLIC SCHOOL EAGLES FOOTBALL TEAM UPON WINNING THE 1A SOUTH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Resurrection Catholic School Eagles Football Team wrapped up a historic season thrashing the Lumberton Panthers in the Class 1A South State Championship; and

WHEREAS, with unshakeable nerve, the unbeaten and top ranked Eagles entered the South State Championship at home in War Memorial Stadium on November 27, 2015, with a 12-0 record; and

WHEREAS, the underdogs by any measure, the Eagles entered the playoffs for the very first time, while the Panthers had won four Class 2A State titles overall before dropping down to Class 1A three seasons ago; and

WHEREAS, a resurrection indeed, the Eagles football team rose from the grave in 2009, and after playing two seasons as an independent team and in the Louisiana private league, they were able to join the Mississippi High School Activities Association in 2011; and

WHEREAS, for the first time in school history, the Eagles went into this game with an outstanding 12-0 record, and joined an elite list of prep football teams in Jackson County to venture so deep into postseason with perfect marks, with only four other Jackson County teams reaching 12-0 in the past 45 years of action on the gridiron; and

WHEREAS, after beating Lumberton for the South State Title, the Eagles received the honor of competing in the Class 1A State Championship game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford; and

WHEREAS, the Eagles' dominant defense was the foundation of this year's team, and this disruptive force achieved three consecutive shutouts prior to the South State Title game and an astonishing eight shutouts during the entire season of play, making the team an unstoppable powerhouse in the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, the state championship game against Hollandale Simmons was historic for many reasons, not least of which because it was the first matchup of undefeated schools for a state title since 2010 and the first ever game in Mississippi in which neither team trailed in a game during the season; and

WHEREAS, through outstanding leadership and inspiration of Resurrection's Head Coach Scott Sisson, the Eagles were ready for every obstacle that came their way with high energy and a great attitude; and

WHEREAS, not only are the Eagles treading on new ground, Coach Sisson has made history by becoming the first head football coach in Jackson County to lead three different football teams to the state playoffs; and

WHEREAS, though the season is over, Coach Sisson has an eye to the future, realizing that in three years Resurrection has become known for the intimidating way the team takes over the football field, as the Eagles have won 24 out of their past 27 games and their entire offense will be returning, so there is truly much to look forward to; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and honor the achievements of such tenacious student athletes as the Resurrection Catholic School Eagles Football Team, who have brought honor to their school, their community, and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Resurrection Catholic School Eagles Football Team and Head Coach Scott Sisson for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 1A South State Championship, for the first time in school history, and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future and academic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Scott Sisson, Resurrection Catholic School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
