A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. GLEN COLLINS ON HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON AND OFF THE FOOTBALL FIELD AND HIS RECOGNITION AS A SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE FOOTBALL LEGEND IN 2013 FOR HIS EXCEPTIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL CAREER AT MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY FROM 1978 TO 1981.
WHEREAS, Mr. Glen Collins, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, was named a Southeastern Conference Football Legend in 2013 representing Mississippi State University at the Southeastern Conference Championship Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, in December 2013; and
WHEREAS, Glen Collins attended the Jackson Public School System and graduated from Jim Hill High School, and he was one of Mississippi's top high school football players earning scholarship offers from major universities throughout the nation and was also the Mississippi High School All Star Game Defensive MVP; and
WHEREAS, Glen, a defensive lineman who finished his Bulldogs career with 205 tackles and 26 sacks, accepted a scholarship to attend Mississippi State University where he earned First Team Southeastern Conference honors, Kodak All-American First Team recognition, Senior Player of the Year, and was named a college football SureFire Top Ten Player who played amongst All-Americans across America; and
WHEREAS, he was the Cincinnati Bengals first round pick in the 1982 NFL Draft, and after spending six years in the NFL ending with the San Francisco 49ers in 1987, he retired and returned to Mississippi State and earned his bachelor of science degree in education; and
WHEREAS, Glen returned to Jackson and became involved in several community organizations working with youth and adults on the importance of developing healthy life skills and alcohol and drug prevention programs, and he worked for DREAM Inc., and worked directly with the Mississippi and national school systems speaking on alcohol and drug-free living and delivering workshops and creating sports camps for youth and coaches; and
WHEREAS, through his sports camps and seminars and hard work ethic, Glen stressed the importance of developing healthy life habits that are conducive to a greater quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Glen was inducted into the Mississippi State University Hall of Fame and the SEC Hall of Fame, currently volunteers his services on various community boards and is the founder of Y.E.S. (Youth Empowerment System), Inc., serves on Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant's physical fitness committee and is the Vice President of the Mississippi Chapter of the NFL Players Association, which involves giving back to the community through activities such as the NFLPA Celebrity Bike Giveaway; and
WHEREAS, Glen is married to Charlotte Collins, his lovely wife of almost 20 years, and is the proud father of three beautiful children, Lekeia, Glen Jr., and Taylor; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to honor great men, such as Mr. Collins, whose life work encourages academics, community service and sports to the youth in this country:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Mr. Glen Collins on his many accomplishments on and off the football field and his recognition as a Southeastern Conference Football Legend in 2013 for his exceptional college football career at Mississippi State University from 1978 to 1981.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Glen Collins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
