A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING LIBRARIAN ROBERT FORBES AND THE BURNSVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR RECEIVING THE MARSHALL CAVENDISH EXCELLENCE IN LIBRARY PROGRAMMING AWARD BY THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION.
WHEREAS, due to the efforts and leadership of Librarian Robert "Bob" Forbes, the Burnsville Public Library, a branch of the Northeast Regional Library System, has been awarded the Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Library Programming Award by the American Library Association; and
WHEREAS, this annual award includes a financial contribution of $2,000.00, and it recognizes a school or public library that demonstrates excellence in library programming by providing programs which have community impact and respond to community needs; and
WHEREAS, the Burnsville Library received the award for two programs that target elementary and pre-adolescent children--"A Learning Opportunity: Flight Technology" (ALOFT) and "Stop Abductions Forever" (SAFE); and
WHEREAS, created by Librarian Bob Forbes, the ALOFT program is a model aircraft construction class that is offered after school at the library, in which children receive complimentary membership in the Academy of Model Aeronautics, construct model aircraft from kits provided by the library and learn the mechanics of flight, concluding with the opportunity for the children to participate in test flying his or her airplane in a fly-in sponsored by local model builders clubs; and
WHEREAS, again created by Mr. Forbes, the SAFE program consists of interactive video, instruction and role-playing activities that teach elementary and pre-teen children how to avoid unsafe situations that may result in a child's abduction; and
WHEREAS, the creativity and dedication exhibited by Bob Forbes should serve as an example to all of how one individual can have a significant impact on a community and on the youth of that community, who are its future; and
WHEREAS, this summer, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to his community and its children, Mr. Forbes will accept the Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Library Programming Award on behalf of the Burnsville Public Library at the American Library Association's annual conference in New Orleans, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend such outstanding individuals as Bob Forbes, who has brought honor to himself, Burnsville Public Library, the community and the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Librarian Robert Forbes on his great success as the leader of the Burnsville Public Library, and for that library receiving the Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Library Programming Award.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Robert Forbes, the Burnsville Public Library, the Northeast Regional Library System, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
