A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING DAMION FLETCHER FOR HIS ATHLETIC SUCCESS AND CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GOLDEN EAGLES FOOTBALL TEAM.

     WHEREAS, Damion Fletcher, born July 1, 1987, in Biloxi, Mississippi, enjoyed tremendous athletic success, had many accomplishments and received numerous accolades during his career as a running back for the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Football Team; and

     WHEREAS, Damion set a Southern Miss school record with seven 100-yard rushing performances his freshman year, and broke the school and Conference USA record for a freshman by totaling 1,388 rushing yards while averaging 106 yards per game; and

     WHEREAS, returning as a sophomore to shatter that record with nine 100-yard games, he set the USM rushing record with 1,586 yards while also scoring 15 touchdowns and averaging 169.9 yards per game; and

     WHEREAS, as a junior, Damion continued to succeed as a Golden Eagle and rushed for 1,313 yards and 10 touchdowns while recording 33 receptions for 248 yards and a touchdown; and

     WHEREAS, he concluded his collegiate career by breaking the 1,000-yard barrier during his final campaign, finishing the 2009 season with 1,015 yards and becoming the ninth player in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history to rush for 1,000 yards in all four collegiate seasons; and

     WHEREAS, participating in an incredible four bowl games in four seasons, Damion was named the 2007 GMAC Bowl Most Valuable Player and participated in the 2007 PapaJohns.com Bowl and the 2008 and 2009 New Orleans Bowls; and

     WHEREAS, Damion was named Freshman All-American by five different organizations, earned 2007 First Team All-Conference USA honors, was named to the All-Conference USA Freshman Team, and was named a 2008 Preseason Second Team All-American and 2008 Preseason First Team All-Conference USA player; and

     WHEREAS, by finishing his career with a remarkable 5,302 rushing yards, Damion currently sits eighth on the NCAA's career rushing list ahead of current NFL star LaDainian Tomlinson and former NFL star Herschel Walker; and

     WHEREAS, winning the prestigious Conerly Trophy as the best college football player in the State of Mississippi during the 2007-2008 football season, Damion Fletcher was further defined as a talented individual who is distinguished from his peers by his exceptional athleticism, skill and ability; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend the impressive achievements of such an exceptional student athlete as Damion Fletcher, whose skill and high degree of sportsmanship bring great honor upon his school, his community and the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Damion Fletcher for his athletic success and career accomplishments with the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Football Team and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Damion Fletcher, the University of Southern Mississippi and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
