 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF AND PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS OF MRS. JESSIE BURKS HENDERSON AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Jessie Lee Burks Henderson, a beloved former teacher of the Greenwood Public Schools departed this life on January 28, 2011, at the blessed age of 77; and

     WHEREAS, known by many as one of the strongest and hardest working teachers in Greenwood, she went the extra mile for her students by tutoring students before and after school without pay, having taught when teachers were not paid for extra time spent with students; and

     WHEREAS, this unmatched passion for children also motivated Mrs. Henderson to tutor students on weekends without payment; and

     WHEREAS, this English teacher led the Threadgill Junior High School's Spelling Bee Team to win top honors in the state and national competition; and

     WHEREAS, an active church member, she performed as a pianist and organist in various local churches for more than 50 years, coordinated many Women's Day programs for various churches, and welcomed soloists to her home for extra help to ensure that they were comfortable with their parts; and

     WHEREAS, she was also an active participant in Friendship's Black History Month March, the Greenwood Voters' League events and any other faith-based activity that occurred in Greenwood; and

     WHEREAS, her passion for children was shared by her dear husband, who accompanied her on numerous trips with junior high students on bus trips to Libertyland in Memphis for several years; and

     WHEREAS, as a result of her hard work and many philanthropic efforts within the community, the Greenwood Mentoring Group's Learning Center bears her name; and

     WHEREAS, to cherish her memory, Mrs. Henderson leaves seven children, Causie, Esther, Elizabeth, Jessilyn, Solomon, George and Kenneth; a brother, William; two sisters, Dorothy Jean and Barbara; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to honor Mississippi educators such as Jessie B. Henderson whose passion has intellectually enriched the lives of generations of Mississippians:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of Mrs. Jessie Burks Henderson for her philanthropic efforts with the children of this state and express deepest sympathy upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Jessie Burks Henderson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
