A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. VASHTI UNDERWOOD MUSE ON HER MERITORIOUS AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO EDUCATION IN THE MAGNOLIA STATE.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Vashti Underwood Muse has dedicated her life to serving others through education, which has impacted many communities within the Magnolia State; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Muse's greatest service to Hinds Community College and the State of Mississippi has been her devotion to her students; and
WHEREAS, for 50 years she has been the champion for at-risk students and has ensured that they have an opportunity to succeed; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Muse's calling in life is to help at-risk students, that began when she was teaching first graders, and the experience of educating a child to love knowledge has driven her ever since; and
WHEREAS, from 1961 to 1978, Mrs. Muse was a public elementary school teacher in Starkville and Meridian, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, during this time, Mrs. Muse was one of the first innovators in Mississippi of basic reading programs for elementary students; and
WHEREAS, in 1978, her husband, Dr. Clyde Muse, became President of Hinds Community College and Mrs. Muse was, among other things, the first lady of the college; and
WHEREAS, subsequently in 1980, Mrs. Muse officially became a member of the Hinds Community College reading faculty where she enriched her teaching knowledge by continuing her study in the field of developmental education; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Muse has worked tirelessly with recognized associations for developmental education, including the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) and the Mississippi Association for Developmental Education (MADE), and has served in both of these organizations in a number of offices including President of MADE from 1988 to 1989 and President of NADE from 1991 to 1992; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Muse has received many awards and recognitions for her work in developmental education, including the 1999 NADE Award for Outstanding Service to Developmental Education, and in 2006, she became the first recipient of the Vashti U. Muse Outstanding Developmental Educator Award that was established in her honor by MADE; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, Mrs. Muse received the Red Rose Award from the Tau Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; and
WHEREAS, in 1986, Mrs. Muse received the Kellogg Institute Leadership Scholarship, which she used to train for higher levels of excellence in her teaching; and
WHEREAS, she was named Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Professor of the Year in 1994, received the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Southern Regional Faculty Member Award in 1995 and received the coveted Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) William H. Meardy Faculty Member Award in 1996; and
WHEREAS, beyond her many awards, Mrs. Muse received an invitation to contribute a chapter in the Inspiring Teaching: Carnegie Professors of the Year Speak, (Chapter 6 � Motivating and Mentoring: Teaching Developmental Students, Anker Publishing Col, Inc., Bolton MA, 1997); and
WHEREAS, in 1980, Hinds Community College recognized Mrs. Muse's dedication over the years with the 3-E (Emphasis on Excellence and Enrichment) Award which is given for Outstanding Service to the College, and then in 1990, she was named the Hinds Community College Outstanding/Distinguished Academic Instructor and recognized by the Lamplighter Project for Outstanding Faculty; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Muse was recognized by one of her students for her dedication to Hinds Community College, which led to her receiving a Life Star Award in 2008, the same year in which she received the Alumni Service Award given by the Hinds Alumni Association; and
WHEREAS, perhaps the honor that most accurately describes her work was being selected for the Baptist Health Systems' Strong Woman Award in the defender category; and
WHEREAS, while most educators prefer to work with the best and brightest, Mrs. Muse prefers to work with the most educationally disadvantaged students; and
WHEREAS, when students first arrive in Mrs. Muse's reading classes, many are not prepared for college work and often are not prepared for life; and
WHEREAS, she goes beyond the everyday duties of a teacher and becomes personally involved with her students where she shows them that she cares not only about their success in the classroom, but about their success in life; and
WHEREAS, through her dedication and determination, Hinds Community College now offers a full program in developmental education for those not prepared for college work; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend such a remarkably wonderful Mississippian who has brought honor to her field of education and to her community:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Mrs. Vashti Underwood Muse on her meritorious and dedicated service to the Magnolia State and extend best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Vashti Underwood Muse and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
