House Concurrent Resolution 104

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE SUCCESS AND ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS LINEBACKER CHRIS WHITE UPON BEING NAMED RECIPIENT OF THE PRESTIGIOUS 2010 CELLULAR SOUTH CONERLY TROPHY.

WHEREAS, two years ago, Chris White was a lightly recruited linebacker who garnered just two scholarship offers from Football Bowl Subdivision programs before deciding to play for Mississippi State University; and

WHEREAS, in a series of events that have proven to be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the Bulldogs won the Egg Bowl for the second consecutive year on November 27, 2010, and before the celebratory festivities could end, were thrown once again into jubilant praise upon the selection of Chris White as the winner of the 2010 Cellular South Conerly Trophy on November 30, 2010, an honor given to Mississippi's top college football player; and

WHEREAS, White, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound senior from Vancleave, Mississippi, has been one of the Southeastern Conference's most productive defensive players this season, making 105 tackles, 15-1/2 those for a loss, six sacks and two interceptions; and

WHEREAS, White, who picked Mississippi State over South Florida, had a decent season as a junior at outside linebacker in 2009, but during the offseason evaluation and adjustment, Coach Dan Mullen and new defensive coordinator, Manny Diaz, decided to move White to inside linebacker, where his production jumped dramatically; and

WHEREAS, a high school standout, White was selected to play in the Mississippi-Alabama High School All-Star game following his senior prep season; made 267 total tackles, eight fumble recoveries, a pair of pass interceptions and one touchdown on defense, selected Region 7 Most Valuable Player following his senior campaign, rushed for 604 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense, and named both the team's offensive and defensive Most Valuable Player as a senior during his high school career; and

WHEREAS, carrying that same tenacious attitude on the gridiron into his junior college years, Chris was named first-team All-America and first-team All-Region XXIII by the National Junior College Athletic Association, Mississippi Most Valuable Player in the inaugural Mississippi Bowl, led his junior college team to back-to-back State Junior College Championships, made 204 total tackles, and named first-team pre-season All-America by the National Junior College Athletic Association prior to his sophomore season, among other accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, the 2010-2011 football season not only further defines Chris White as a talented individual, but also distinguishes him from his peers with exceptional athleticism, skill and ability, and as the recipient of the prestigious Conerly Trophy, solidifies him as the best college football player in the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend the stellar achievements of outstanding student athletes whose talents and high degree of sportsmanship are exemplary of the honor reflected upon their schools and the state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate and commend Chris White upon his athletic accomplishments with the Mississippi State University Bulldogs, for being the recipient of the prestigious 2010 Cellular South Conerly Trophy and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future academic and athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Chris White, Mississippi State University and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
