House Concurrent Resolution 103

(As Adopted by House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE, LEGACY AND SERVICE OF MRS. GEORGIA MOORE, AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Georgia Moore, born Georgia Willis on May 15, 1919, to Mr. Dave Willis and Mrs. Mattie Lou Willis of Carroll County, departed this earthly life on October 8, 2010, to enter into eternal rest with her Heavenly Father, rendering great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, as a child she attended the Browning Industrial School and the Valley Hill Elementary School, and determined at a young age to make a difference in this world by becoming an educator, a path upon which she first embarked after her graduation from Stone Street High School; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Moore was hired as a teacher at Scurlock Elementary School in Whaley right out of high school, and several years later she transferred to Pillow Baptist Church School; and

WHEREAS, in an effort to provide a better foundation of knowledge for her pupils, Mrs. Moore enrolled in a teacher-training program through Alcorn A&M College, and began working on her formal degree at the Mississippi Vocational College in 1950, successfully completing her studies in 1953 and was awarded her bachelor of science degree in elementary education; and

WHEREAS, with her newly acquired formal training and credentials, Mrs. Moore then began working at the Browning Elementary School in the Browning Community, where she would meet and later marry Mr. Van Moore, and they were blessed with three children; and

WHEREAS, endowed with a sense of completion, as she now had the best of both worlds, a loving family and a career in which she could make a difference in the lives of others, she transferred to Amanda Elzy Elementary School where she served until her retirement in 1984, after 41 years of providing exceptional educational instruction; and

WHEREAS, affectionately known to family and friends as "Madear" or "Mrs. Georgia," she was a preliminary icon and forerunner of the modern-day "Pay it Forward" campaign, as she continued to strive to make a difference in this world after her retirement through her work with the "Meals on Wheels" program in the late 1980s through the 1990s, delivering lunches and caring for the elderly daily; and

WHEREAS, a true public servant and certainly a servant of God, Mrs. Moore was a diligent member of the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Mother Board, in the choir, and fulfilled the duties associated with various other positions held therein; and

WHEREAS, equally involved in giving back to her community through her social and civic involvements as she was with her professional and religious affiliations, Mrs. Georgia was a member of the L'Entre Nous Federated Women's Club, a founding member of the Browning Progressive Civic League and a member of the Leflore County Retired Teachers Association; and

WHEREAS, though she has now crossed the chilling waters of Jordan to stand upon Heaven's celestial shores to enter into the great land of sweet rest in a reunion with her dear husband, Van, and darling daughter, Jewel, the enriched legacy of her service will be cherished in the hearts and memories of her loving survivors:  sons, Charles Moore and Robert Moore; sister, Laura Graham; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend the life of such a generous individual as Mrs. Moore, whose contribution to society and the educational area is noted by the content of character, self-respect, determination, and discipline she instilled in the countless thousands of students privileged to experience her tutelage:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life, legacy and service of Mrs. Georgia Moore and express deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Moore and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
