A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING COACH ELLIS JOHNSON UPON HIS HIRING AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GOLDEN EAGLES FOOTBALL TEAM.

     WHEREAS, Ellis Johnson, a native of Winnsboro, South Carolina, and former Assistant Head Coach for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks Football Team, has been hired as the Head Coach of the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Football Team; and

     WHEREAS, the Golden Eagles football program possesses a rich, storied history of legendary players, historic wins and superior graduation rates among its student athletes, and Coach Johnson's hiring as head coach is testament to that tradition; and

     WHEREAS, a football player himself, Coach Johnson played college football for The Citadel from 1971-1974 as a Defensive End; and

     WHEREAS, before joining the Golden Eagles, Coach Johnson made a name for himself in the college football arena as Defensive Ends Coach at The Citadel in 1976 and then Linebackers Coach at The Citadel in 1982, Head Coach at Gardner-Webb in 1983, Defensive Coordinator at Appalachian State University in 1984, Assistant Head Coach at East Carolina University from 1985-1987, Defensive Coordinator at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1988-1989, Linebackers Coach at the University of Alabama from 1990-1993, Defensive Coordinator at Clemson University from 1995-1996, Defensive Coordinator for the University of Alabama from 1997-2000, Head Coach at The Citadel from 2001-2003, Defensive Coordinator at Mississippi State University from 2004-2007, and most recently, Assistant Head Coach for the University of South Carolina from 2008-2011; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Johnson takes the helm of the Golden Eagles Football Team at the start of the 2012 season, taking his place on the winning path blazed by past coaching legends such as Thad "Pie" Vann, Bobby Collins and Jeff Bower, and is certain to add to the team's current streak of 18 consecutive winning seasons; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize talented individuals in this state, such as Coach Johnson, who will make monumental strides as the leader of Mississippi's championship football program:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Coach Ellis Johnson upon being named the new Head Coach of the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Football Team, and extend sincerest wishes for success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Johnson, the University of Southern Mississippi and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
