AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 47-5-949, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REQUIRE THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO PROVIDE AN OFFENDER, WHO IS HOUSED AT THE WALNUT GROVE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, WITH REMEDIAL CLASSES IF THE OFFENDER FAILS A SUBJECT PRESCRIBED UNDER ADULT BASIC EDUCATION; TO REQUIRE THE DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL CLASSES IN THE AREAS OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS IF AN OFFENDER HAS HIS OR HER HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR GED EQUIVALENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. Section 47-5-949, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:
47-5-949. (1) The
correctional facility authorized in Section 47-5-943 shall provide any * * *
offender housed in the facility
with continuing education throughout his incarceration which leads to the
presentation of a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED)
equivalent. The facility also shall provide a program of vocational education,
which is to be included in the continuing education program for a high school
diploma or GED equivalent.
(2) (a) The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Department of the Department of Corrections shall provide a planned program of individualized instruction in language, arts and mathematics for offenders at the facility.
(b) If an offender fails any subject prescribed under paragraph (a) of this subsection, the department shall provide remedial classes for the incarcerated offender until he or she passes the failed subject area.
(3) The Education Department of the Department of Corrections shall also provide additional classes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to any offender who has received his or her high school diploma or GED equivalent.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2014.
