House Bill 580

AN ACT TO REQUIRE YOUTH COURTS TO ADOPT RULES FOR APPOINTING NONLEGAL ADVOCATES FOR MINORS IN THE YOUTH COURT SYSTEM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Each chancery and county court which handles youth court matters and each youth court shall adopt rules for the appointment of nonlegal advocates to assist minors in youth court proceedings.  Such appointed persons shall assist minors who may not be represented or who may need additional help in navigating the legal system.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2010.
