House Bill 552

AN ACT TO REQUIRE THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO DEVELOP A WRITING CURRICULUM FOR USE BY EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT AND ESTABLISH RULES AND REGULATIONS TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE DISTRICTS TO IMPLEMENT A WRITING CURRICULUM THAT INCLUDES INSTRUCTIONS ON THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MANUSCRIPT HANDWRITING AND CURSIVE HANDWRITING TECHNIQUES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The State Board of Education shall develop a writing curriculum for use by each school district and the board shall establish rules and regulations to be followed by the districts whereby the districts shall implement the curriculum.  The writing curriculum shall include educating students about the fundamentals of manuscript handwriting and cursive handwriting techniques, as well as the age and grade best appropriate for the beginning instruction of manuscript and cursive handwriting.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2017.
