House Bill 333
AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT CERTAIN MATTERS RELATING TO THE ADMINISTRATION OF CERTAIN OBSERVATIONS, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, AS WELL AS THE PROTOCOL AND SUPPORT OF SCHOOL SPIRIT DISPLAYED BOTH ON AND OFF CAMPUS DURING INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI, SHALL BE LEFT TO THE MEMBERS OF THE UNIVERSITY'S ALUMNI ASSOCIATION; TO REQUIRE THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI TO MAIL BALLOTS TO ALUMNI FOR THE ELECTION OF CERTAIN OBSERVANCES; TO ALLOW THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE UNIVERSITY TO ESTABLISH THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. (1) The decision regarding certain matters relating to the administration of certain observations, policies and procedures, as well as the protocol and support of school spirit displayed both on and off campus during intercollegiate athletic competitions for the University of Mississippi, shall be left to the members of the university's alumni association.
(2) (a) The University of Mississippi shall mail all alumni of the university a ballot with a return envelope with the following election choices:
"1. Should the University of Mississippi fly the Mississippi State Flag, including the color guard at sporting events?
________ Yes
________ No
2. The University of Mississippi should be allowed to play "Dixie" and "From Dixie with Love" at any event, on or off campus?
________ Yes
________ No
3. The University of Mississippi Mascot shall be?
________ Colonel Reb
________ Land Shark
________ Black Bears"
(b) The university shall establish the deadline for submission and calculation of all ballots casts, and allow the decision of the majority of those alumni voting to prevail as the collective decision of the university, until such time that another election is held, which shall be at a time deemed appropriate by the administration of the University of Mississippi.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
