House Bill 222

AN ACT TO REQUIRE OWNERS OF RETAIL BUSINESSES THAT ACCEPT THE USE OF CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS FOR PAYMENT FOR THE GOODS OR SERVICES SOLD BY THE BUSINESS TO HAVE VIDEO CAMERAS OR SIMILAR VISUAL RECORDING DEVICES LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE CARD PROCESSING EQUIPMENT TO RECORD THE PERSONS WHO USE THE CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS WITH THAT EQUIPMENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The owner of a retail business at a fixed permanent location that accepts the use of credit cards or debit cards for payment for the goods or services sold by the business shall have video cameras or similar visual recording devices located at or near the card processing equipment to record the persons who use the credit or debit cards with that equipment.  The owner shall maintain the recordings of the persons using credit or debit cards for not less than six (6) months for access by law enforcement personnel.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2023.
