AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF LEE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, TO CREATE A YOUTH COURT REFEREE POSITION FOR THE COUNTY; TO PROVIDE THE APPOINTMENT FOR SUCH POSITION; TO PROVIDE THE DUTIES OF SUCH REFEREE; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  The Board of Supervisors of Lee County, Mississippi, is authorized, in its discretion, to create the position of county youth court referee in order to alleviate the number of cases on the youth court docket in the county court.

     (2)  The youth court referee shall be appointed by the Lee County Judge, and the board of supervisors shall set the salary for such referee.

     (3)  The youth court referee, at the direction of the Lee County Court Judge, is authorized to preside over the following hearings in the county youth court:

          (a)  Detentions;

          (b)  Shelters;

          (c)  Adjudications;

          (d)  Dispositions; and

          (e)  Reviews.

     (4)  The board of supervisors is authorized to create a support/staff position to aid the youth court, and the board shall approve funding for such position on a funds available basis each fiscal year.

     (5)  Nothing under this section shall mandate the position of youth court referee be created.

     (6)  The board of supervisors is authorized to execute any contracts, interlocal agreement or other instruments and may take any other action necessary or convenient to carry out the purposes of this section.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
