1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing the work of Jeff Hayden.
1.3WHEREAS, Senate District 62 is enhanced by the leadership and service of Jeff Hayden, an effective
1.4advocate and principled progressive who lives up to his motto by truly being 'A Voice for the Voiceless';
1.5and
1.6WHEREAS, Jeff Hayden was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on September 24, 1966, to Peter
1.7Hayden and Judith Merrill. At the age of 13, he moved to San Francisco, California, where he spent his
1.8formative years; and
1.9WHEREAS, upon learning the news of his best friend's passing, Jeff moved back to Minneapolis
1.10and began serving the community. He volunteered and served on the Minneapolis Park Board, then became
1.11a city council aide to former City Council member Gary Schiff. In 2005, Jeff ran for an open seat on the
1.12Minneapolis City Council and lost by 141 votes. He then went on to become a nonprofit manager at the
1.13Hearth Connection where he became an advocate for affordable housing; and
1.14WHEREAS, in 2008, Jeff successfully ran for an open seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
1.15Due to the resignation of former Senator Linda Berglin, Jeff ran in a special election in 2011 and won. He
1.16was elected as Assistant DFL leader by his colleagues in 2013; and
1.17WHEREAS, during his legislative career, Jeff advocated for progressive policies in his community
1.18and has been at the forefront of economic justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. In 2014, Jeff authored the
1.19statewide minimum wage increase, which raised wages for thousands of Minnesotans for the first time in
1.20nine years. In 2015, he co-chaired the Senate's first Select Committee on Disparities and Opportunities which
1.21has invested more than $100 million into communities of color; and
1.22WHEREAS, Jeff has received a number of awards through the years, including the Charles E. Mays
1.23Beloved Community award and the Minnesota Housing Partnership Legislative Leader award. He was the
1.24founding board member of the City of Lakes Community Land Trust and the former chair of the Powderhorn
1.25Park Neighborhood Association; and
1.26WHEREAS, Jeff currently serves as the co-chair of Emergency Preparedness, Cyber, and Homeland
1.27Security with the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, is a member of the African American Leadership
1.28Forum, and is a Fellow with the Hunt Institute; and
1.29NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it commends
1.30Jeff Hayden for his work in Senate District 62 and extends its warm wishes for his continued success; and
1.31BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an enrolled
1.32copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the Senate
1.33Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Jeff Hayden.
