1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the life of St. Cloud Fireworks Commissioner Tom Richardson.
1.3WHEREAS, St. Cloud's fireworks celebration has been held for 76 years. The first display
1.4in 1947 was launched at Lake George Park. The display was then moved to the Benton County
1.5Fairgrounds and later Wilson and Hester Parks; and
1.6WHEREAS, before Tom Richardson took over as fireworks commissioner, the event was
1.7organized by Tom's father, Ed Richardson. Tom picked up the torch after Ed's leadership and
1.8stepped in to run the annual fireworks celebration; and
1.9WHEREAS, the annual 20-minute fireworks display draws an estimated 40,000 people to
1.10the St. Cloud Mississippi Riverfront each year. Tom dedicated countless hours every year to oversee
1.11the all-volunteer event that is completely funded by donations and sponsorships; and
1.12WHEREAS, Tom was the lifeblood of the annual fireworks celebration and contributed so
1.13much to the event over the years, including organizing the sesquicentennial pyrotechnics display
1.14when St. Cloud celebrated its 150th year and coming up with a the concept of launching the fireworks
1.15from a barge on the river; and
1.16WHEREAS, Tom passed away on March 25, 2023, at the age of 65. He will be dearly missed
1.17by his family, friends, and all of the St. Cloud community; and
1.18NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.19honors the life of Tom Richardson and extends deepest condolences to his family.
1.20BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.21enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.22Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family of Tom
1.23Richardson.
