1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to transportation;amending Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 161.20,
1.3subdivision 4.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 161.20, subdivision 4, is amended to read:
1.6    Subd. 4. Debt collection. The commissioner shall make reasonable and businesslike
1.7efforts to collect money owed for licenses, fines, penalties, and permit fees or arising from
1.8damages to state-owned property or other causes related to the activities of the Department
1.9of Transportation. The commissioner of public safety shall provide to the commissioner of
1.10transportation all accident reports involving damage to state-owned infrastructure. The
1.11commissioner may contract for debt collection services for the purpose of collecting a
1.12money judgment or legal indebtedness. The commissioner may enter into an agreement
1.13with the commissioner of public safety to use debt collection services authorized by
1.14this subdivision when civil penalties relating to the use of highways have been reduced
1.15to money judgment. Money received as full or partial payment shall be deposited to the
1.16appropriate fund. When money is collected through contracted services, the commissioner
1.17may make payment for the service from the money collected. The amount necessary for
1.18payment of contractual collection costs is appropriated from the fund in which money
1.19so collected is deposited.
