1.1A house resolution
1.2recognizing Nurse Anesthetists Week.
1.3WHEREAS, nurse anesthetists were the first professional group to provide anesthesia in
1.4the United States and are the oldest recognized group of advanced practice registered nurse
1.5specialists; and
1.6WHEREAS, these registered nurses have completed a graduate-level educational program
1.7in a nationally accredited program of nurse anesthesia and after graduation are qualified to take
1.8the national certifying examination; and
1.9WHEREAS, graduates who successfully pass the examination can use the title, Certified
1.10Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and in addition, all graduates of nurse anesthesia
1.11educational programs receive a master's degree upon completion of the rigorous academic and
1.12clinical curriculum; and
1.13WHEREAS, CRNAs provide anesthesia services in all settings in which anesthesia is
1.14delivered, and are not required by state or federal law to be supervised or directed by physician
1.15anesthesiologists; and
1.16WHEREAS, according to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, more than
1.17two-thirds of all rural hospitals rely on CRNAs to provide anesthesia care, and without these
1.18advanced practice nurses, some 1,500 facilities would be unable to maintain trauma stabilization,
1.19surgical, and obstetrical capabilities, forcing many rural Americans to travel long distances
1.20for such services; and
2.1WHEREAS, each year, CRNAs working in hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers,
2.2physician's offices, and the medical facilities of the United States Military, Veteran's
2.3Administration, and Public Health Service are the hands-on providers of approximately 32 million
2.4anesthetics given to patients in the United States; and
2.5WHEREAS, the period of January 23-29, 2011, has been designated as Nurse Anesthetists
2.6Week; NOW, THEREFORE,
2.7BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the State of Minnesota that it
2.8recognizes the week of January 23-29, 2011, as Nurse Anesthetists Week in Minnesota to
2.9recognize the importance of the certified registered nurse anesthetists and their role in providing
2.10quality healthcare for the public.
