House Resolution No. 282.
A resolution to declare May 30, 2012, as Legacy Scholars Day in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Increasing postsecondary access and attainment is vital in providing a healthy and sustainable workforce in the state of Michigan and the United States of America; and
Whereas, The state of Michigan and the United States of America have adopted the goal of increasing our nation’s postsecondary attainment levels to 60% by the year 2025; and
Whereas, Legacy Scholars was established in 2005 as part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s celebration of its 75th anniversary, with the goal of creating a college-going culture where education after high school is an expectation and not a luxury; and
Whereas, Legacy Scholars is about making high school diplomas and college degrees a reality for students of Battle Creek Public Schools, Calhoun Community High School, and the Lakeview School District, with students receiving a scholarship to Kellogg Community College up to the equivalent of 62 credit hours, when they graduate from high school; and
Whereas, The first class of Legacy Scholars is graduating this year and has been working hard for over half a decade utilizing the tools the Legacy Scholars program provided, such as mentoring and college visits and support, realizing the Legacy Scholars mission that there really are “No Limits” in life when education and opportunity intersect; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Michigan House of Representatives, that the members of this legislative body declare May 30, 2012, as Legacy Scholars Day in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That the efforts of the Legacy Scholars Program and Scholarship, to enhance educational opportunities and expectations in Battle Creek and the entire state of Michigan, are truly commendable and set an outstanding example of academic achievement for all communities to follow.
