The Speaker, on behalf of the entire membership, offered the following resolution:

A resolution of tribute offered as a memorial for Woodrow Stanley, former member of the Michigan House of Representatives.

Whereas, It was with great sadness that the members of the House of Representatives learned about the passing of Woodrow Stanley. He will be remembered as a dedicated public servant who was passionate about improving the lives of his constituents in the Thirty-fourth District in the city of Flint and Genesee County; and

Whereas, Woodrow Stanley was born in Schlater, Mississippi, in 1950. He later moved to Flint, Michigan, where he spent the majority of his life. He earned degrees from Mott Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint, and completed additional coursework towards a Master of Public Administration; and

Whereas, Woodrow Stanley’s lengthy political career began in 1983, when he was appointed, and later reelected, to the Flint City Council. In 1991, he was elected to the city’s highest office and served as Flint mayor for over a decade. In 2004, he was elected to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, where he completed two terms. Throughout his career, he became a prominent leader in the Michigan Democratic Party and other organizations, such as the Michigan Municipal League, the Michigan Association of Mayors, and the National League of Cities. In 2009, after a landslide victory, he began his first of three terms with the House of Representatives; and

Whereas, during his time in the House, Representative Stanley was dedicated to improving the economic and educational outcomes of the residents in his district and the state of Michigan. He served with distinction as a vice chair of the House committees on New Economy and Quality of Life and Local, Intergovernmental, and Regional Affairs. Additionally, he served as a member of the House committees on Public Employee Health Care Reform; Regulatory Reform; Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources; Urban Policy; Banking and Financial Services; Redistricting and Elections; and Local Government. Finally, he served as First Vice Chairperson of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus; and

Whereas, Woodrow Stanley, characterized by his colleagues as a community hero and passionate public servant, leaves behind a legacy as a dedicated advocate for his constituents. He will also be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. May his family take comfort in the knowledge that his efforts will long continue to enrich the people of this state; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we offer this expression of our highest tribute to honor the memory of Woodrow Stanley, a member of the House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Stanley family as evidence of our lasting esteem for his memory.
