house resolution no.117

Reps. Berman, Meerman, Griffin and LaFave offered the following resolution:

A resolution to express support for the nation of Israel.

Whereas, Israel is a great democracy in the Middle East and a force for good in the world. As a nation and a people, Israel and Israelis exemplify courage and perseverance in the face of historic oppression and ongoing hostility; and

Whereas, The United States shares a strong and historic bond with Israel rooted in a common belief in democratic values and a shared interest in defending those values. Since the United States became the first country to recognize Israel in 1948, the United States has repeatedly demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the security of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state; and

Whereas, Israel is a key strategic ally to the United States and has been the United States' partner in fighting terrorism and extremism in the Middle East. Joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and weapons development are just some of the cooperative initiatives that have ensured the safety and security of both countries; and

Whereas, Israel has been under attack from forces that seek change, not through the rule of law or peaceful protest, but through missile strikes and other terrorist tactics against innocent civilians within Israel. Israel has responded appropriately and with great restraint to protect its people from these heinous acts; and

Whereas, It is important as an increasingly vocal minority questions the relationship between the United States and Israel that we remember the bonds that connect us and reaffirm our commitment to our long-time ally. An attack against Israel is an attack against democracy; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we express support for the nation of Israel and acknowledge its restraint militarily and socially amidst terrorist attacks and other oppressive forces; and be it further

Resolved, That we express the sense of the House that the rule of law must always triumph over terrorism and subversion; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the members of the Michigan congressional delegation, the United States Secretary of State, and the Ambassador of Israel to the United States.
