A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating the Carmel High
School Marching Band on winning the Class AAAA Bands of
America Contest and the Class A Indiana State School Music
Association's Marching Band State Finals.

MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating the Carmel
High School Marching Band on winning the Class AAAA
Bands of America Contest and the Class A Indiana State School
Music Association's Marching Band State Finals.
Whereas, The Carmel High School Marching Band, under
the direction of Director Chris Kreke, has 222 members who
have performed in parades and competitions throughout the
country;
Whereas, The Carmel High School Marching Band topped
93 of the most impressive and talented bands from across the
country to win the Class AAAA Bands of America Grand
National Championship in November of 2012;
Whereas, The Bands of America National Championship is
regarded as the premier marching band event in the nation. The
three day event is held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis;
Whereas, Class awards for the competition were based on
scoring from the semi-final round. With an impressive score of
95.85 points out of a possible 100, Carmel placed 1st overall
out of 12 finalists;
Whereas, This national championship is the second for the Marching Greyhounds, the first victory was clinched in 2005;
Whereas, The band was also awarded with "Best Overall
Music" for their performance in the finals round;
Whereas, As winners of the Bands of America National
Championship, the Carmel High School Marching Band will
participate in the 125th Annual Rose Bowl Parade in
Pasadena, California;
Whereas, The Marching Greyhounds also won the Indiana
State School Music Association's Class A State Championship,
held on November 3, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium;
Whereas, This Class A championship is the fourth for
Carmel High School, with previous wins in 1990, 2001, and
2002;
Whereas, Based on Carmel High School's previous
accomplishments and a production titled "What a Tangled Web
We Weave", the band was presented with the Sudler Shield by
the John Philip Sousa Foundation, a prestigious international
award which serves as one of the highest forms of recognition
for marching band programs;
Whereas, The Sudler Shield was created in 1987 in an
effort to recognize outstanding marching bands that excel in
musical performance, marching execution, choreography and
show design. Carmel High School is the 68th recipient of the
award, which has been previously awarded to bands in 18
states and 11 international ensembles from eight different
countries; and
Whereas, The Carmel High School Marching Band has had an exceptional year. The band has shown a commitment to excellence that goes beyond playing notes and moving around a football field. We wish them continued success: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana State Senate congratulates Carmel High School Marching Band on winning the Class AAAA Bands of America Contest and Class A Indiana State School Music Association's Marching Band State Finals.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Carmel High School Marching Band Director Chris Kreke.
