MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating the Izaak
Walton League of America on 90 years of defending the
outdoors.
Whereas, On January 14, 1922, fifty-four ambitious
sportsmen gathered to discuss the deterioration of America's
top fishing streams;
Whereas, Wildlife habitat was being destroyed across the
country and our nation's forests and wilderness were quickly
vanishing. Knowing that action needed to be taken to preserve
the wildlife the group formed an organization to combat water
pollution and protect the country's forests, a step that would
unknowingly lead to many victories for conservation of land;
Whereas, Ninety years later, the 39,000 members of the
Izaak Walton League of America are building on the foundation
of those who preceded them in responding to conservation
challenges;
Whereas, The League has been at the forefront of every major clean water battle in the United States. Spearheading conservation of land and waters for the benefit of all
Americans, including creation of the Upper Mississippi
National Wildlife and Fish Refuge and Superior National
Forest and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness;
Whereas, The 250 chapters are in communities across
America, working to introduce youth and families to
conservation and outdoor recreation. Chapter members build
nature trails, restore stream banks, and plant trees. League
chapters also award more than $125,000 in scholarships each
year to college students working toward natural resource
degrees; and
Whereas, The Izaak Walton League of America has
embodied the tradition of grassroots conservation activism with
their 90 years of service to defending our nation's wildlife and
land. Starting as a group of fifty-four visionary sportsmen to
growing to an amazing number of 39,000 members, they truly
deserve to be honored in their crusade to better our land:
Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates the Izaak Walton
League of America on 90 years of defending the outdoors.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Izaak Walton League of
America.
