A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Dallas and Edna
Foster on their 70th wedding anniversary.

MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Dallas and
Edna Foster on their 70th wedding anniversary.
Whereas, Dallas and Edna Foster celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary on December 23, 2010;
Whereas, Dallas was born April 15, 1916 in Morgan
Township, spending his formative years on a farm. He
graduated from Morgan Township High School in 1934,
after which he returned to the farm as a worker. Dallas also
worked as a surveyor, measuring ground for the Farm
Program;
Whereas, Edna Metz was born August 24, 1918 in
Clinton, Indiana. She graduated from Clinton High School
in 1936 and earned a teaching certificate from Indiana State
University in 1938. She taught 3rd and 4th grade for two
years before meeting Dallas;
Whereas, Dallas and Edna first met when Dallas was cultivating corn with a team of horses near his parents' house. He saw Edna park in front of the house, so he
stopped the horses to let them rest and to see who the visitor
was. A woman, acting as matchmaker, encouraged Dallas to
write to Edna and assured him that Edna would write back
if he did;
Whereas, Dallas and Edna married on December 23,
1940 in Sullivan, Indiana. After they married, they began
farming and milking cows full-time. Edna was raised in the
city, but quickly learned how to work on a farm after
marrying Dallas

Whereas, In the subsequent years, Dallas worked for the
Jasper County Highway Department, the State Highway
Department, and for Clark Farms near Wheatfield, Indiana,
where Dallas and Edna still reside;
Whereas, Edna taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades at
Kankakee Valley Schools for 25 years, retiring in 1983;
Whereas, Dallas and Edna served together at the
Wheatfield School Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) for
several years;
Whereas, Dallas has raised honey bees for many years.
In addition to selling honey, his bees have been used to
pollinate blueberry, tomato, and cucumber fields in the
Wheatfield and Morgan Township areas;
Whereas, He has also enjoyed showing his corn at local
corn shows. He won trophies for Best Shelled Peck, Longest
Ear, and Best 10 Ears;
Whereas, Dallas and Edna have worked at Farmer's
Markets in Chicago, Illinois with many of their family
members over the years, often selling their son's produce
from his orchard in Huntington, Indiana;
Whereas, Dallas and Edna also worked for the election board for Jasper County for several years. In addition, they have been long time members of the Wheatfield Church of Christ;
Whereas, The most cherished part of Dallas and Edna's
life together are their nine children. They have five sons and
four daughters, including a foster daughter. Through Dallas
and Edna's encouragement, all nine children have received
their bachelor's degrees from colleges and universities in
Indiana. Six of the children graduated from Purdue
University, one from Indiana State, one from Indiana
Wesleyan, and one from Davenport University;
Whereas, In their spare time, Dallas is a enthusiastic fan
of the Purdue men's and women's basketball teams. Edna
loves to cook, particularly homemade bread, fried chicken,
gravy, jam, jelly, and apple squares. She also enjoys baking
rhubarb and blueberry pies;
and
Whereas, Dallas and Edna Foster are congratulated on
the occasion of their 70th anniversary, a milestone that is
impressive and merits recognition: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates Dallas and Edna
Foster on their 70th wedding anniversary.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to Dallas and Edna Foster.
