SENATE RESOLUTION

     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in Cedar Lake, Indiana on being named a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School.

    Whereas, The United States Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, recognized 269 schools as 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools based on their overall academic excellence, or for making progress in improving student academic achievement levels;

    Whereas, Douglas MacArthur Elementary School was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in the category of "Exemplary High Performing." This category recognizes schools that are among the state's highest performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally-normed tests;

    Whereas, The U.S. Department of Education established the National Blue Ribbon School program in 1982 to recognize the top schools from each state out of more than 138,000 schools nationwide;

     Whereas, Douglas MacArthur Elementary School was the

only school in Lake County, and one of only five elementary schools in Indiana, to receive this honor;

    Whereas, Principal Marian Buchko has been leading MacArthur Elementary for 17 years, dedicated to enriching the lives of her students and ensuring that they receive a quality education; and

    Whereas, Douglas MacArthur Elementary School serves as an example for all Hoosier schools. This prestigious award is well-deserved and acknowledges the hard work of the teachers, staff, parents, and students: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate congratulates Douglas MacArthur Elementary School on being named a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Principal Marian Buchko.
