A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring the many
accomplishments of Dr. David Baker.

MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring the many
accomplishments of Dr. David Baker.
Whereas, Born on December 21, 1931 in Indianapolis,
Indiana, Dr. David Baker is a virtuoso performer on multiple
musical instruments. He serves as Distinguished Professor of
Music and Chairman of the Jazz Department at Indiana
University School of Music;
Whereas, Dr. David Baker received his bachelor's degree
and master's degree in music education from Indiana
University;
Whereas, Dr. David Baker serves as the conductor and
artistic director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks
Orchestra;
Whereas, Dr. David Baker has taught and performed
throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New
Zealand, and Japan;
Whereas, Dr. David Baker has been nominated for the
Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award;
Whereas, Dr. David Baker has received numerous awards
including the National Association of Jazz Educators Hall of
Fame Award (1981), President's Award for Distinguished
Teaching from Indiana University (1986), the American Jazz
Masters Award from the National Endowment of the Arts
(2000), and an Emmy Award for his musical score for the PBS
documentary, For Gold and Glory (2003).
Whereas, Dr. David Baker has created more than 2,000
compositions including jazz and symphonic works, chamber
music, and ballet and film scores. Other publications include
65 recordings, 70 books, and 400 articles: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate honors the accomplishments of Dr. David Baker.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to Dr. David Baker and the Indiana University School of Music.
