SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No. _____

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating Carol Tumey on her induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

    Whereas, On April 30, 2011, in recognition of her contributions to Indiana high school basketball, Carol Tumey, a former Center Grove High School girls' basketball coach, will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and presented with the St. Vincent Health Silver Medal Award;

    Whereas, After graduating from Franklin College, 21- year-old Carol Tumey began teaching at Center Grove High School, eager to take the principles she learned in college and apply them in the classroom;

    Whereas, While teaching at Center Grove, Tumey had the idea of starting a girls' basketball team at the school. The team's first season was in 1963, when they played a 10-game schedule;

    Whereas, As it became clear that the Center Grove girls were interested in playing competitively, other schools like Greenwood, Franklin, Whiteland, Southport, and Beech Grove joined with their own basketball teams;

    Whereas, In Tumey's sixth season, the 1968-69 team finished the season undefeated, establishing themselves as

the first of many truly great Center Grove High School girls' basketball team;

    Whereas, Center Grove's girls' basketball teams in the 1960s were different than today, as the team played with six players on the court at the same time, instead of the five player system that is used in modern basketball;

    Whereas, In the years following the girls' basketball team, other girls' sports were added at Center Grove High School. By 1972, the school boasted girls' teams in volleyball, cross country, and track and field. At this point, Tumey became the girls' sports director, in addition to her duties leading the girls' basketball program;

    Whereas, Around the same time, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced that girls' basketball would become a sanctioned sport starting with the 1975-76 school year;

    Whereas, Through the course of her career at Center Grove, Tumey coached basketball, volleyball, cross country, and track and field. She also served as the school's Intramural Director and Assistant Athletic Director;

    Whereas, Tumey decided to retire from Center Grove in 2003, ending a career that spanned four decades. Tumey says she is "so proud of what happened during those years with both boys and girls sports";

    Whereas, Tumey has been married to her husband Dale for 47 years and is currently employed by her alma mater, Franklin College, in the Education Department. She also serves on the school board at Center Grove. She was previously inducted into the Franklin College Hall of Fame; and

    Whereas, Carol Tumey will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on April 30, 2011. Her career at

Center Grove High School and her induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame is a fitting honor, given her impressive contributions to the sport during her impressive and productive tenure: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate     of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives     concurring:

    SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates Carol Tumey on her induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Carol Tumey.
