A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Governor to
proclaim February 20-25, 2012, Canada Week in Indiana.
Whereas, Canada - by far- is Indiana's most important primary
export market, with $16.8 billion worth of merchandise and goods
exchanged, and 37% of Indiana's worldwide exports sold to Canada
in 2010 (more than Indiana's next seven global export destinations
combined), with Indiana consistently enjoying a surplus in its trade
with Canada; and 162,300 Indiana jobs depending on Canada-U.S.
trade;
Whereas, Canadian-owned companies employ more than 12,000
workers in Indiana and many Indiana companies have operations in
Canada;
Whereas, Canada has become the USA's biggest supplier of
imported energy, with the largest single private sector development
project in Indiana - the multi-billion dollar expansion of the Whitting
Refinery - being undertaken to permit processing of petroleum from
Canada's oil sands (the world's third largest oil reserve);
Whereas, More than 213,000 Canadians visited Indiana in 2010
and more than 158,000 Hoosiers visited Canada that year;
Whereas, Canada and Indiana share many deep economic,
historical, cultural, and familial ties: Therefore,
SECTION 1. In recognition of the strong and lasting ties between
Canada and the great State of Indiana, that the period February 20-25,
in the year two-thousand twelve, be proclaimed Canada Week in
Indiana.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to Ilene K. Grossman, Assistant
Director of Midwestern Legislative Conference.
