Transportation & Veterans Affairs.
RESOLUTION No. 4
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana department
of transportation to rebuild the Cline Avenue bridge over the Indiana
Harbor and Ship Canal.
Whereas, Cline Avenue is a major artery used by trucks
carrying steel from the lakefront mills;
Whereas, The 1.25-mile Cline Avenue bridge is a part of
this industrial artery leading to steel mills along Lake
Michigan, the Majestic Star Casinos in Gary, and the
Ameristar Casino in East Chicago;
Whereas, Approximately 30,000 vehicles per day use this
link between the Chicago Skyway and the Indiana Toll Road
to Interstate 80/94;
Whereas, Businesses, steel mills, oil refineries, and casinos
in northwest Indiana are the most seriously affected by the
bridge closure;
Whereas, Business losses also directly affect state and local
governments, which benefit from taxes businesses pay; and
Whereas, With the closing and eventual destruction of
Cline Avenue and the Cline Avenue bridge, the state will be
forced to find ways to alleviate the effects of increased
industrial traffic on nearby roads: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the Indiana department of transportation to rebuild the Cline Avenue bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal.
SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the commissioner of the Indiana department of transportation.
