A HOUSE RESOLUTION opposing the International
Olympic Committee's Executive Board's decision to eliminate
wrestling from the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020.
Whereas, The Executive Board of the International Olympic
Committee has proposed eliminating the sport of wrestling from
the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020; however, this
proposal remains to be approved or disapproved by the full
committee at its September 2013 general assembly;
Whereas, Wrestling is recognized as one of the world's
oldest competitive sports, dating back to 3000 B.C.;
Whereas, Wrestling was one of the original sports of the
ancient Greek Olympic Games and of the first modern Olympic
Games;
Whereas, Wrestling has been a traditional strength of the
United States Olympic team, with 124 medals awarded to the
United States throughout history;
Whereas, Wrestling is one of the world's most diverse
sports, with participants from nearly 200 countries around the
world;
Whereas, There are 313 high school wrestling programs in
Indiana, and over 280,000 high school students participated in
wrestling throughout the United States in 2012;
Whereas, There are 264 varsity collegiate wrestling
programs in the United States with eight programs located in
Indiana;
Whereas, Indiana is one of three states with single-class
wrestling; New Jersey and California are the other two;
Whereas, The sport of wrestling builds great strength, not
only of body but also of character, strengthening the virtues of
self-confidence, self-discipline, courage, and sportsmanship;
Whereas, Wrestling has produced many outstanding
national leaders, including presidents of the United States,
United States Supreme Court justices, United States senators,
members of Congress, and business and military leaders;
Whereas, Wrestling provides mainstream opportunities to
athletes of all physical builds and body sizes, including student
athletes who are blind, deaf, and physically handicapped and
who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in
athletics;
Whereas, Unlike other sports, wrestling does not have a
professional association; therefore, wrestling in the Olympics
is the ultimate goal of every athlete participating in the sport;
Whereas, The removal of wrestling from the Olympics will
have an impact on every single level of the sport; and
Whereas, Wrestling epitomizes the spirit of the Olympic
Games: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives opposes the decision of the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board to eliminate wrestling from the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020 and urges the Committee to reconsider and reinstate wrestling as a core sport of the Summer Olympic Games.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the International Olympic Committee and to the United States Olympic Committee.
