        A HOUSE RESOLUTION opposing the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board's decision to eliminate wrestling from the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020.

    Whereas, The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee has proposed eliminating the sport of wrestling from the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020; however, this proposal remains to be approved or disapproved by the full committee at its September 2013 general assembly;

    Whereas, Wrestling is recognized as one of the world's oldest competitive sports, dating back to 3000 B.C.;

    Whereas, Wrestling was one of the original sports of the

ancient Greek Olympic Games and of the first modern Olympic Games;

    Whereas, Wrestling has been a traditional strength of the United States Olympic team, with 124 medals awarded to the United States throughout history;

    Whereas, Wrestling is one of the world's most diverse sports, with participants from nearly 200 countries around the world;

    Whereas, There are 313 high school wrestling programs in Indiana, and over 280,000 high school students participated in wrestling throughout the United States in 2012;

    Whereas, There are 264 varsity collegiate wrestling programs in the United States with eight programs located in Indiana;

    Whereas, Indiana is one of three states with single-class wrestling; New Jersey and California are the other two;

    Whereas, The sport of wrestling builds great strength, not only of body but also of character, strengthening the virtues of self-confidence, self-discipline, courage, and sportsmanship;

    Whereas, Wrestling has produced many outstanding national leaders, including presidents of the United States, United States Supreme Court justices, United States senators, members of Congress, and business and military leaders;

    Whereas, Wrestling provides mainstream opportunities to athletes of all physical builds and body sizes, including student athletes who are blind, deaf, and physically handicapped and who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in athletics;

    Whereas, Unlike other sports, wrestling does not have a professional association; therefore, wrestling in the Olympics is the ultimate goal of every athlete participating in the sport;

    Whereas, The removal of wrestling from the Olympics will

have an impact on every single level of the sport; and

    Whereas, Wrestling epitomizes the spirit of the Olympic Games: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives opposes the decision of the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board to eliminate wrestling from the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020 and urges the Committee to reconsider and reinstate wrestling as a core sport of the Summer Olympic Games.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the International Olympic Committee and to the United States Olympic Committee.
