A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing Charles B. Redd for
his service to the city of Fort Wayne, the state of Indiana, and
civil rights causes.
Whereas, Mr. Redd has spent his entire life in service to
mankind; and,
Whereas, Mr. Redd began working for the Urban League of
Fort Wayne in 1968; and,
Whereas, while employed by the Urban League of Fort
Wayne through 1974, Mr. Redd assisted the
Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance and the Fort Wayne
Branch of the NAACP in their service as advocates for public
school desegregation and helped organize "freedom schools"
for children to attend during the boycott of Fort Wayne
Community Schools; and,
Whereas, Mr. Redd represented the 1st District on the Fort
Wayne City Council from 1984 to 1992 and served as council
president for two consecutive years; and,
Whereas, Mr. Redd retired as chairman of the Indiana
Democratic African-American Caucus and has been recognized
as an outstanding civil rights leader by the Democratic Party
through the creation of the Charles B. Redd Honorary Fair
Share Declaration, a list of goals for minority inclusion; and,
Whereas, Mr. Redd was the first to be honored with the
"Key to the Fort" award from Mayor Tom Henry of Fort Wayne
for Redd's 40 years of extraordinary commitment to the
community through a lifetime of stewardship and involvement;
and,
Whereas, Mr. Redd received an honorary doctorate degree
from Cornerstone Christian Bible College; and,
Whereas, Mr. Redd will be recognized by the Fort Wayne
Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute for his many
contributions in furthering civil rights causes throughout the
state of Indiana; Therefore:
SECTION 1. That the State of Indiana owes a great debt to this
outstanding citizen for his tireless efforts to bring equality to all men
and for his untiring service to the city of Fort Wayne and its citizens.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Charles Redd and
his family.
