RESOLUTION No. ________
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating Hoosier Boys
State on the occasion of its 75th anniversary.
Whereas, Hoosier Boys State is a unique program
intended to educate young men in the principles and
practices of Indiana's city, county and state governments;
Whereas, The Indiana Department of the American
Legion, in concert with other Legion departments across the
country, founded Indiana's Boys State program in 1937
partly in an effort to counter the pro-Communist propaganda
of the so-called Young Pioneers Camps, holding its first
session in the field house of Butler University, currently
hosted by Trine University in Angola;
Whereas, The program's course of instruction is unlike
any classroom experience, instead requiring students to
actively participate in a simulation of Indiana's city, county
and state governments, wherein students run for office and
engage in negotiation and cooperation to write and enforce
legislation; and,
Whereas, The program has already educated more than 60,000 young Hoosier men, many of whom later went on to prominent careers in Indiana business and politics, including Governor Mitch Daniels, former Governor Frank O'Bannon,
former Senator Birch Bayh, Senator Richard Lugar, former
Congressman Phil Sharp, former Congressman Lee
Hamilton, former Speaker of the House Paul Mannweiler,
Speaker of the House Brian Bosma, former Secretary of State
Edward Simcox, former Secretary of State Joseph Hogsett,
Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court Randall Shepard,
Associate Justice Brent Dickson, Brian Lamb, founder and
president of C-SPAN, Terry Lester, television actor, and Dr.
Joseph Allen, former NASA astronaut: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates Hoosier Boys State on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, honors its many years of service in educating young Hoosier men on the principles and practices of democratic government, and thanks its staff and sponsors for their dedication to the betterment of their communities and the state of Indiana.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the leadership of Hoosier Boys State.
