A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Viola J. Taliaferro
for her faithful service and success as a judge.
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was born in Virginia and graduated
from high school at age 14;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro received her B.S. from Virginia State
College in 1947;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro received a Doctor of Jurisprudence
from Indiana University School of Law in 1977;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro has worked with high school students
in Maryland for over 25 years;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro started practicing law in 1977 and
retired as a judge in 2004, combining for over 27 years;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was an innovator in juvenile justice
initiatives in Bloomington, IN and around the state of Indiana through
her work with the Indiana State Bar Association and other legal
organizations around the state;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro placed a special emphasis on the
equal treatment of children of color during her law career;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro received the Neal-Marshall Award
for Afro-American Affairs from Indiana University in 1990;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro received the Women in the Law
Award from the Indiana State Bar Association in 1993;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro, in 1997, earned the Women in the
Law Achievement Award and Women in the Law Committee from the
Indiana State Bar Association;
Whereas, in 1997, the Civil Rights for Children Committee of the
Indiana State Bar Association created The Honorable Viola J.
Taliaferro Awar;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was named Woman of the Year by
Monroe County Commissioners in 2000;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was named Woman of the Year by the
Bloomington Commission on Status of Women in 2000;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was named Judge of the Year by the
Indiana Correctional Association in 2000;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was awarded the National
Association of Black Women President's Award in 2001;
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was named Judge of the Year by the
National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association in 2004;
Whereas, Governor Joe Kernan awarded Viola J. Taliaferro the
Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 2004; and,
Whereas, Viola J. Taliaferro was named a 2011 Black History
Month Living Legend by the City of Bloomington: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the House of Representatives commemorates
Viola J. Taliaferro for her many years of dedicated service to her
community as a teacher, administrator, lawyer, judge and advocate.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House transmit a copy
of this resolution to Viola J. Taliaferro.
