2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Rev. Rollin Gordon Oswald, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on November 17, 2016; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Rev. Oswald was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to | ||||||
6 | Gordon and Myrtle Oswald on June 17, 1925; he graduated from | ||||||
7 | Roosevelt Senior High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United | ||||||
8 | States Marines during World War II; he transferred to the | ||||||
9 | United States Navy V12 program, where he earned a bachelor's | ||||||
10 | degree from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, | ||||||
11 | Pennsylvania during his service; upon being discharged, he | ||||||
12 | studied at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, | ||||||
13 | completing a Bachelor of Divinity; he married Loraine Jones in | ||||||
14 | Cedar Rapids on June 20, 1948, and a year later, he was | ||||||
15 | ordained in the Methodist Church; and

16 | WHEREAS, Rev. Oswald served as the Superintendent for the | ||||||
17 | Cedar Rapids School District; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Rev. Oswald and his wife served in churches across | ||||||
19 | the state of Iowa, including in St. Ansgar, Little Cedar, | ||||||
20 | Dubuque, Mount Vernon, Iowa Falls, and West Des Moines; in | ||||||
21 | 1982, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from | ||||||
22 | Simpson College; after retirement in 1988, he continued his |

1 | ministry as an associate at St. James United Methodist Church | ||||||
2 | and as Chaplain at Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Rev. Oswald was an avid gardener, photographer, | ||||||
4 | reader, and strong supporter of education; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Rev. Oswald was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
6 | Loraine; his brother, Gene Oswald; his sister, Doris West; his | ||||||
7 | parents; his parents-in-law, Thomas and Mabel Jones; and his | ||||||
8 | sister-in-law, Patricia Jones; and

9 | WHEREAS, Rev. Oswald is survived by his sons, Mark (Jo) | ||||||
10 | Gordon, and Peter (Maureen) Thomas; his daughters, Deborah (Ed) | ||||||
11 | Jones Tierney, and Rebekah Ann (Bob) Lane; his brother-in-law, | ||||||
12 | Thomas Marion (Joyce) Jones Jr.; his grandchildren, Anne (Mark) | ||||||
13 | Dysinger, Elizabeth (Alex) Pinnell, Amanda Oswald, Jessica | ||||||
14 | (Jason) Davis, Peter (Brogan) Oswald II, Samuel Oswald, Jacob | ||||||
15 | (Amanda) Steward, Jill (Tim) Henninger, Kate (Ross) Huff, | ||||||
16 | Patrick Tierney, Allison Lane, and Ryan Lane; his | ||||||
17 | great-grandchildren, Olivia and Benjamin Pinnell, Lucy | ||||||

1 | Rev. Rollin Gordon Oswald, and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
2 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||

6 | deepest sympathy.
