2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Terry W. Cole Sr. of Champaign, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on August 26, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Terry Cole was born in St. Louis to James P. Sr. | ||||||
6 | and Mae Helen
Young Cole on January 24, 1947; he was active in | ||||||
7 | a number of sports at East St. Louis Senior High
School, | ||||||
8 | including football and track & field; he won awards in high | ||||||
9 | jump and became an outstanding football player; he was the | ||||||
10 | first black
quarterback for the East St. Louis Flyers; while | ||||||
11 | growing up, he was an active Boys Club member; he married Elyne | ||||||
12 | Johnson in East St. Louis on August 24, 1969; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Terry Cole received a scholarship to North | ||||||
14 | Carolina College in Durham; he moved to Champaign in
1969 and | ||||||
15 | transferred to the University of Illinois, where he graduated | ||||||
16 | with an
undergraduate degree in recreation and park | ||||||
17 | administration and a master's degree in sports
management; he | ||||||
18 | was active in the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, first as a | ||||||
19 | volunteer for his college coursework
and then as an employee; | ||||||
20 | he remained an involved and loyal supporter of the organization | ||||||
21 | for 50
years; and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Terry Cole began his career at the University of |

1 | Illinois as an Assistant Director for the
Division of Campus | ||||||
2 | Recreation in 1976; in 1979, he joined the Division of | ||||||
3 | Intercollegiate Athletics,
where he served as Academic | ||||||
4 | Counselor, Director of Academic Services, Assistant
Director | ||||||
5 | of Academic Affairs, Senior Associate Director, and Interim | ||||||
6 | Director of Athletics; he retired from
the Division of | ||||||
7 | Intercollegiate Athletics in August of 2011; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Terry Cole was inducted as an honorary member of | ||||||
9 | the Varsity "I" Association in 2010, the highest honor
awarded | ||||||
10 | by the board of directors on behalf of the Division of | ||||||
11 | Intercollegiate Athletics; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Terry Cole enjoyed golf, University of Illinois | ||||||
13 | athletics, spending time with his grandchildren, and fishing; | ||||||
14 | and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Terry Cole was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
16 | his sister, Donna Lee Flowers; and his brother, James Cole II; | ||||||
17 | and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Terry Cole is survived by his wife, Elyne; his | ||||||
19 | son, Terry W. (Stacey) Cole Jr.; his daughter, Dr.
Terrilyne | ||||||
20 | Cole; his grandchildren, Kody LaBrecque, Jazzmine Cole, Terry | ||||||
21 | W. Cole III,
Adam Byrd, and baby girl Cole; his special nephew, | ||||||
22 | Rodrick Flowers; his brothers, Terrell Cole Sr. and Bobby |

6 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
7 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
8 | Terry W. Cole Sr., and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
9 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
10 | further
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the family of Terry Cole as an expression of our | ||||||
13 | deepest sympathy.
