2 | WHEREAS, Dual credit programs offer students the | ||||||
3 | opportunity to take challenging college courses while still in | ||||||
4 | high school; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Successful completion and satisfactory | ||||||
6 | performance of a dual credit course award students college | ||||||
7 | credit at colleges and universities statewide, representing a | ||||||
8 | substantial savings in college tuition for students and parents | ||||||
9 | and in grants; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, An awareness of this program can provide pathways | ||||||
11 | to higher education for all students, especially those from | ||||||
12 | underrepresented communities; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Challenging dual credit courses significantly | ||||||
14 | contribute toward building a globally competitive, | ||||||
15 | career-ready workforce in Illinois; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, The Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois | ||||||
17 | Community College Board, Illinois Board of Higher Education, | ||||||
18 | and non-profit college access organizations that administer or | ||||||
19 | facilitate the participation in dual credit programs have had a | ||||||
20 | long-standing partnership to build participation in dual | ||||||
21 | credit programs in the State of Illinois; and

1 | WHEREAS, During State fiscal year 2016, there was a total | ||||||
2 | of 54,871 unduplicated high school students enrolled in one or | ||||||
3 | more Illinois community colleges; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The above figure represents continued growth in | ||||||
5 | the number of public school students taking dual credit courses | ||||||
6 | in the State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The Senate encourages four-year colleges and | ||||||
8 | community colleges to visit high schools and take action to | ||||||
9 | help students register in dual credit courses; therefore, be it
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
11 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that March 18, 2018 through | ||||||
12 | March 24, 2018 is recognized as Dual Credit Week in the State | ||||||
13 | of Illinois to promote awareness of a valuable educational | ||||||
14 | opportunity for high school students.
