| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Richard M. "Dick" Jaffee; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Richard Jaffee graduated from the University of | ||||||
5 | Wisconsin School of Business in 1957; he received honorary | ||||||
6 | Doctor of Humane Letters from the Illinois Institute of | ||||||
7 | Technology in 2001 and Rush University in 2013; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Richard Jaffee earned his CPA certificate from the | ||||||
9 | State of Illinois in 1957 and briefly worked in public | ||||||
10 | accounting for the firm of Deloitte & Touche; in 1958, after | ||||||
11 | serving as an officer in the United States Army, he joined the | ||||||
12 | Oil-Dri Corporation of America; he assumed the role of | ||||||
13 | president from his father and company founder, Nick Jaffee, in | ||||||
14 | 1960, and became chief executive officer in 1962; under his | ||||||
15 | stewardship, the company became a worldwide leader in the | ||||||
16 | manufacturing of clay products, employing 800 people; he | ||||||
17 | retired in 2001 but continued to serve as chairman of the board | ||||||
18 | until his passing; and

19 | WHEREAS, From 2008 to 2013, Richard Jaffee served as | ||||||
20 | chairman of the board of trustees of Rush University Medical | ||||||
21 | Center and chairman of its executive committee; he chaired | ||||||
22 | Rush's largest-ever capital campaign, ultimately raising over |

1 | $389 million; his legacy remains forever memorialized by the | ||||||
2 | new Rush University Center hospital dedicated in 2012; he was a | ||||||
3 | life trustee of the Illinois Institute of Technology, the | ||||||
4 | Museum of Science and Industry, and the Chicago History Museum; | ||||||
5 | he served on an SEC advisory committee on smaller public | ||||||
6 | companies and on an advisory committee to the Chicago Federal | ||||||
7 | Reserve; he also served as a director of Harris Bank until | ||||||
8 | 2006; and

9 | WHEREAS, Richard Jaffee was inducted into the Chicago | ||||||
10 | Business Hall of Fame and received the Making History Award; | ||||||
11 | and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Richard Jaffee was known to invest in the personal | ||||||
13 | stories of everyone around him, from cab drivers to the valets | ||||||
14 | at Rush; he loved to help people, usually by connecting them to | ||||||
15 | someone who could be of further assistance; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Richard Jaffee was the beloved husband of the late | ||||||
17 | Shirley Handmaker Jaffee to whom he was married for 60 years; | ||||||
18 | the loving father of Susan (David), Karen (Thomas), Nancy | ||||||
19 | (William), and Daniel (Heidi); the grandfather of Jennifer, | ||||||
20 | Michael, Kevin (Rebecca), Jimmy, Coley, Becca, Camille, | ||||||
21 | Jeffrey, Taylor, Elise, Claire, Joey, Jaqueline, and | ||||||
22 | Nathaniel; and loving brother to Robert (Phyllis); therefore, | ||||||

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Richard M. "Dick" Jaffee, and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
4 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
5 | further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Richard Jaffee as an expression of | ||||||
8 | our deepest sympathy.
