2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Robert A. "Bob" Helman of Hyde Park, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on October 4, 2024; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Bob Helman was born to Nathan and Ester (Weiss) | ||||||
6 | Helman in 1934 and grew up on the West Side of Chicago; he | ||||||
7 | graduated from Austin High School and attended the University | ||||||
8 | of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he received his bachelor's | ||||||
9 | degree and juris doctor from Northwestern University; he was | ||||||
10 | discharged from the United States Army in 1958 and married | ||||||
11 | Janet Williams; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Bob Helman began his legal career after his | ||||||
13 | military discharge, joining Isham, Lincoln and Beale as its | ||||||
14 | first Jewish lawyer; he moved his practice to Mayer Brown in | ||||||
15 | 1967, serving as chairman from 1984 to 1998; he led the firm | ||||||
16 | through a period of significant challenges and drove Mayer | ||||||
17 | Brown to diversify and grow; it more than doubled in size under | ||||||
18 | his leadership, and he remained a partner through 2023; | ||||||
19 | throughout his career, he took pride in devoting time to civic | ||||||
20 | and charitable causes, embracing his responsibility as a | ||||||
21 | citizen and member of the community; and

22 | WHEREAS, Bob Helman enjoyed a full life, built around his |

1 | family, a distinguished legal career that spanned 65 years, | ||||||
2 | and service to his community; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Bob Helman is survived by his wife of 66 years, | ||||||
4 | Janet; his children, Marcus (Karen Smith), Adam (Rachel | ||||||
5 | Krause), and Sarah; his grandchildren, Benjamin Smith-Helman | ||||||
6 | (Alayna Held) and Bailey Smith-Helman; and his sister, | ||||||
7 | Marjorie (Lawrence) Kravitz; therefore, be it

8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
10 | Robert A. "Bob" Helman and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
11 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
