| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Ralph Schuler of River Forest, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on July 13, 2021 at the age of 89; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler was born in Chicago to Ralph and | ||||||
6 | Martha Schuler, who loved and pushed him; he adopted the same | ||||||
7 | parenting style with his own children to great success; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler grew up in Oak Park on Lombard | ||||||
9 | Avenue; he raised his five children in the same home; though he | ||||||
10 | attended Fenwick High School, his children were students at | ||||||
11 | Oak Park and River Forest High School; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler was a lifelong educator, | ||||||
13 | specifically history; he began his teaching career at DePaul | ||||||
14 | Academy and retired from East Leyden High School as the | ||||||
15 | history department chairperson; he coached boys and girls | ||||||
16 | tennis and was also a union steward; and

17 | WHEREAS, Aside from tennis, which he played at the Oak | ||||||
18 | Park Tennis Club, Ralph Schuler enjoyed reading poetry and | ||||||
19 | literature; he wrote multiple free verse poems in Nags Head, | ||||||
20 | North Carolina and was a dedicated member of the Old Bulls | ||||||
21 | reading club; one of his favorite quotes was, "Don't let a few |

1 | facts get in the way of a good story."; and

2 | WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler valued his friendships with Don | ||||||
3 | Gancer and Terry McCarthy, who was the best man in his wedding; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler and his wife, Donna, ensured that | ||||||
6 | their children were knowledgeable about history, recognized | ||||||
7 | good music across genres, and ate food from different | ||||||
8 | cultures; for a half-century, his children and grandchildren | ||||||
9 | have traveled to Nags Head during the summer; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler was compassionate, humorous, | ||||||
11 | hospitable, an advocate for civil rights, and a White Sox fan; | ||||||
12 | the Sox won the last game that he attended in the 10th inning; | ||||||
13 | and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler is survived by his loving wife, | ||||||
15 | Donna; his sister, Jane Cutt; his children, Rich, Laura (John) | ||||||
16 | Reardon, Bill, Stephen (Mary Jo), and Stacy (Eric) Wettstein; | ||||||
17 | his grandchildren, Matt, Nate, and Ellen Schuler, Keith, | ||||||
18 | Audrey, and Caroline Reardon, Andrea and Ryan Schuler, and | ||||||
19 | Julia and Anna Wettstein; and his great-grandchild, Presley | ||||||
20 | Reardon; therefore, be it

2 | Ralph Schuler and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
3 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||

5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Ralph Schuler as an expression of | ||||||
7 | our deepest sympathy.
