2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Janet L. Smith of McHenry, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on September 10, 2017; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Janet Smith was born in Woodstock to Gerald and | ||||||
6 | Joan Larkin on April 3, 1952; she graduated from McHenry | ||||||
7 | Community High School in 1970; she received her nursing degree | ||||||
8 | from Alverno College in 1974; she married John Smith on January | ||||||
9 | 24, 1975; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Janet Smith began her nursing career as a | ||||||
11 | Registered Nurse in the Obstetrics Department at Woodstock | ||||||
12 | Memorial Hospital; she was a Certified Childbirth Educator and | ||||||
13 | taught Lamaze classes for expectant mothers throughout McHenry | ||||||
14 | County for over 30 years; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Janet Smith was involved with many charitable | ||||||
16 | organizations and fundraising events, including acting as a | ||||||
17 | local coordinator of mail donation campaigns for the American | ||||||
18 | Cancer Society and American Heart Organization; for many years, | ||||||
19 | Janet led the local "Love Lights a Tree" fundraiser for the | ||||||
20 | American Cancer Society, during which she personalized | ||||||
21 | Christmas ornaments, which were then placed on a tree in a | ||||||
22 | prominent local business; and

1 | WHEREAS, Janet Smith was a founding member of the Centegra | ||||||
2 | Mad Hatter's Fundraising Committee, which benefitted women's | ||||||
3 | health in McHenry county; she was also the leader of the design | ||||||
4 | committee for the McHenry Riverwalk Foundation and selected the | ||||||
5 | railings, lights, and gazebo for the Riverwalk; she also | ||||||
6 | participated in numerous fundraisers for Marian Central | ||||||
7 | Catholic High School; she received the distinction of becoming | ||||||
8 | the first Honorary Marian Central Catholic High School Alumni; | ||||||
9 | in 2009, she received the Frank E. Low Award for her lifelong | ||||||
10 | community service involvement in the city of McHenry; she was a | ||||||
11 | member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Janet Smith was a member of St. | ||||||
13 | Patrick Church, where she sang in the choir; her family fondly | ||||||
14 | referred to her as "Sister Janet Mary" due to her strong faith | ||||||
15 | and commitment; she was greatly admired for her strong faith, | ||||||
16 | modesty, generosity, clean-living lifestyle, meticulous | ||||||
17 | organization skills, and her compassion for anyone in need of | ||||||
18 | help; the strongest force in her life was her love of family | ||||||
19 | and friends; she cherished the many vacations she enjoyed with | ||||||
20 | her family and close friends and the time spent with her family | ||||||
21 | and grandchildren; and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Janet Smith was preceded in death by her father; | ||||||
23 | and her brother-in-law, Nick Hodge; and

1 | WHEREAS, Janet Smith is survived by her husband of 42 | ||||||
2 | years, John; her sons, Scott (Denise) Smith, Patrick (Lindsay) | ||||||
3 | Smith, and Jonathan (Emily) Smith; her grandchildren, Amelia, | ||||||
4 | Cameron, Abigail, Addison, Natalie, Kinley, and Charley; her | ||||||
5 | mother, Joan Larkin; her sisters, Nancy Cook, Sally Hodge, Ann | ||||||
6 | (Frank) Cuda, Julie (Tom) Sharp; her brother, Jerry (Melinda) | ||||||
7 | Larkin; her aunts, Mary Durland and Mitzi Griffin; and her many | ||||||
8 | nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws; therefore, be it
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
10 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
11 | Janet L. Smith, and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
12 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
13 | further

14 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
15 | presented to the family of Janet Smith as an expression of our | ||||||
16 | deepest sympathy.
