2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
Philip Harnett Corboy, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | June 12, 2012; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was the brother, son, grandson, and | ||||||
6 | nephew of Chicago police officers; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was a proud graduate of St. Margaret | ||||||
8 | Mary Grade School and St. George High School; he subsequently | ||||||
9 | attended 4 colleges and in 1949 graduated first in his class | ||||||
10 | from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was renowned as a pioneer in | ||||||
12 | personal injury law and was affectionately known as "The Dean"; | ||||||
13 | as the Senior Partner and Founder of Corboy & Demetrio, P.C., | ||||||
14 | he devoted his career to representing the rights of the injured | ||||||
15 | and their families with integrity, diligence, and respect for | ||||||
16 | the rule of law for over 60 years; during his career, he won | ||||||
17 | many big awards from large corporations and was instrumental in | ||||||
18 | ushering in the tamper-proof lids that drug companies put on | ||||||
19 | bottles of pain reliever; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy served as president of the Chicago | ||||||
21 | Bar Association and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association; he |

1 | was a former chairman of the Section of Litigation of the | ||||||
2 | American Bar Association and a former chair of the American Bar | ||||||
3 | Association's Special Committee on Medical Professional | ||||||
4 | Liability; he was a member of the American Association for | ||||||
5 | Justice, the Inner Circle of Advocates, the International | ||||||
6 | Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American College of Trial | ||||||
7 | Lawyers, and the Center for Disability and Elder Law; he also | ||||||
8 | served as general counsel for the Illinois Democratic Party and | ||||||
9 | served on the boards of directors of numerous business, legal, | ||||||
10 | and charitable groups and many medical and legal task forces; | ||||||
11 | and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was well known in his community for | ||||||
13 | his great commitment to charity work; he served as a leader of | ||||||
14 | the Catholic Archdiocese 'Big Shoulders' fund for many years; | ||||||
15 | the Philip H. Corboy Law Center building was dedicated to him | ||||||
16 | at the Loyola University School of Law, where he and his wife | ||||||
17 | made the largest single gift in the school's history, and a | ||||||
18 | room was named for him at the Chicago Bar Association; and

19 | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was listed by the National Law | ||||||
20 | Journal as one of the top 100 most influential lawyers in the | ||||||
21 | country since 1985, when the survey began, and was one of only | ||||||
22 | 13 lawyers nationwide to hold that distinction; he was listed | ||||||
23 | in "The Best Lawyers in America" since its inception in 1987; | ||||||
24 | he was also the recipient of the 1996 Big Shoulders |

1 | Humanitarian Award for his commitment to a fund for inner-city | ||||||
2 | Catholic schools; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was the dearly beloved husband of | ||||||
4 | Mary A. Dempsey; the loving father of Philip Harnett, Jr. | ||||||
5 | (Margaret), Dr. John (Alix), Thomas (Shanti), the late Joan | ||||||
6 | (James Epstein), and the late Bobby Corboy; the adored | ||||||
7 | grandfather of Matt and Nora Epstein, Lauren, Bobby, David, | ||||||
8 | Kevin, Juliette, and Ryan Corboy; the loving brother of Daniel, | ||||||
9 | ret. CPD (Nancy) Corboy and the late Marge (the late Lawrence) | ||||||
10 | Kotin; the fondest brother-in-law of Sheila (John) Ryden, | ||||||
11 | William (Rose) Dempsey, Dr. Robert (Diane) Dempsey, and Mark | ||||||
12 | Dempsey; the dear uncle of Dan (Jean) Kotin, Karen Corboy, Dr. | ||||||
13 | Daniel (Dr. Jackie) Corboy, Kara, Conor, Emily, and Genevieve | ||||||
14 | Dempsey, and Jack, Michael, and Mark Ryden; and the devoted son | ||||||
15 | of the late Harold and the late Marie Corboy; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
17 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
18 | his family and friends, the passing of Philip Harnett Corboy; | ||||||
19 | and be it further
| ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Philip Corboy as an expression of | ||||||
22 | our sympathy.
