2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of James H. "Jim" McGrath of Springfield, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on January 24, 2024; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jim McGrath was born on a farm west of Woodson to | ||||||
6 | William and Ida (Begnel) McGrath on July 13, 1929; he | ||||||
7 | graduated from Routt High School in Jacksonville; he married | ||||||
8 | Virginia K. Hanley on April 29, 1950; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Jim McGrath worked as a truck driver for Amrhein | ||||||
10 | Bakery; he became a member of the Painters Local #90 in 1951 | ||||||
11 | and advanced to the position of business agent, which he held | ||||||
12 | for 38 years; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Jim McGrath served on many boards and | ||||||
14 | commissions, including as president of the Central Illinois | ||||||
15 | Building and Construction Trades Council, chairman of both the | ||||||
16 | Illinois State Painters Welfare Fund and the Illinois Painters | ||||||
17 | State Conference, precinct committeeman for the Sangamon | ||||||
18 | County Democratic Party, trustee of the Springfield Sanitary | ||||||
19 | District, and deputy director for the Illinois Department of | ||||||
20 | Labor; and

21 | WHEREAS, Jim McGrath was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs; |

1 | he enjoyed gardening, betting on the ponies with a special | ||||||
2 | group of friends, and following the stock market and politics; | ||||||
3 | one of his greatest pleasures was spending time with his | ||||||
4 | children; he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in | ||||||
5 | sports and other activities and always remembered to make them | ||||||
6 | feel special on their birthdays; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Jim McGrath was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
8 | Virginia; his son, Jack McGrath; his brothers, Gerald "Jake" | ||||||
9 | and Bernie; his sisters, Theresa, Bernice, Cecelia, Aggie, and | ||||||
10 | Rosie; and his son-in-law, Tommy Freeman; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Jim McGrath is survived by his sons, James | ||||||
12 | (Sonja), Patrick (Michele), Michael (Valerie), Robert | ||||||
13 | (Debbie), Larry (Cathy), and David (Anne); his daughters, | ||||||
14 | Peggy McGrath, MaryJane Miller, and Theresa Freeman; his | ||||||
15 | daughter-in-law, Sam McGrath; 18 grandchildren; several | ||||||
16 | great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; | ||||||
17 | therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | James H. "Jim" McGrath and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
21 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
